This is the only licensed practice in the whole ~1/3 of New York State that does home births. Many years of legwork have been done by the current practice owner with the local medical community, so home birth is accepted and even sometimes welcomed. Potential thus exists for hospital privileges along with home deliveries. VBAC and vaginal breech birth are available at one of the area hospitals. There is an active birthing community including the St. Lawrence County Birth Connection (supporting natural birth), several nursing moms groups, a midwifery study group, many doulas, and the North Country Midwives group that meets for support, peer review and to exchange information. The area is similar to New England with friendly, safe small towns and rural areas with cities close enough for day trips. Many outdoor activities are available in this region between the Adirondack Mountains, the Thousand Islands, the St. Lawrence River, and Lakes Champlain and Ontario. Cultural events abound with 4 universities located in the immediate area, including a world-renowned music school. Ottawa, Canada's capital is only 1.5 hours away. The community is diverse with a large Amish and Mennonite population, a Native American nation, and many foreign-born people associated with the colleges.Midwives of any experience level are welcome. The current midwife is looking to transition into semi-retirement and is willing to share and gradually sell equipment and assets, so practice setup costs would be minimal. This is an excellent opportunity for new graduates, as the midwife is open to entering into a formal mentorship process. The possibility exists for federal loan repayment, as this is a practitioner shortage area.
