Certified Nurse Midwife / Certified Midwife– Labor & Delivery (Mercy Hospital of Buffalo): The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) or Certified Midwife (CM) functions within the organized healthcare system as defined by the American College of Nurse Midwives core competencies of Basic Midwifery Practice and the Standards for the Practice of Nurse Midwifery. The CNM/CM collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide comprehensive care to the pregnant and laboring woman. The CNM/CM uses the processes of assessment, diagnosis, management and evaluation to provide care that integrates the psychosocial and physical needs of women. The CNM/CM obtains history and performs physical examination to evaluate and coordinate patient care at the Mercy Hospital Labor & Delivery unit. Along with physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team, the CNM/CM strives to ensure the provision of quality patient care leading to optimal outcomes. The CNM/CM works in collaboration with the OB/Gyn Department Chairman and attending physicians.

25%-30% are attended by eleven (11) midwives and have been for past 5 years – eight of 11 are hospital employed CNMs who work both in clinic (four of the 8) and on the labor deck.

Precepting for CNMs/CM available – if you like to teach or need to be spruced up, both are possible at Mercy. Minimally you have delivered babies in the past 12 months.

CNM/CM’s practice quite autonomously with Physician back up and provide first assist in C-Sections , triage on Labor and Delivery, post-partum rounds and if desired have the ability to be in outpatient practice to see patients prenatally and also deliver .
Varied types of pregnant patients including active labor patients both high risk and low risk, outpatients presenting with various complaints both emergent and non-emergent.
Midwives also see patients in Primary Care Site and offer Comprehensive Women’s Care as well as prenatal and post-partum care.
Accurate history & physical exams, accurate interpretation of electronic fetal heart rate monitor.
Enthusiastic Team player who ascribe to ACNM and ACOG guidelines. Provides loving support to their Mom’s to be and their families, as well as their teammates.
Possess a license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State if CNM.
Current licensure as a Certified Nurse Midwife or Certified Midwife in New York State.
Graduate of an accredited Nursing program and Nurse Midwife program.
Meets credentialing requirements as appropriate through the Medical Staff office.
BLS certified (within one year of hire)
NRP and EFM certified (within one year of hire)
