Minnesota Birth Center is an independently owned and operated practice that is led by certified nurse-midwives in the Twin Cities. The freestanding birth center was founded in 2012 by perinatologist Dr. Steven Calvin, who is also the medical director. We have provided care at almost 2000 births in the first 7 years of operation and are continuing to grow. 2 freestanding birth centers with a total of 5 birth suites.
2 CNMs on call at all times; clinic held weekdays at both sites.
Privileges and physician collaboration agreements at two hospitals: United in St. Paul and Abbott in Minneapolis; both are part of the Allina Health system.
Clients have access to water birth, nitrous, labor slings, birth stools, in-house ultrasound, IBCLC, postpartum home visits, postpartum group care.
VBAC and planned hospital birth available at United Hospital.
30-50 births a month.
Well-care, family planning including birth control, STI screening, and other women’s health services offered.

Logistics of position:
Full time, 1.0 appointment, which is considered 7 units of work in a 2 week pay period. A unit of work is equivalent to an administrative office day, a clinic shift, or a 24-hour call shift. This position would be a mix of these 3 types of units.
Call must be taken within 30 minutes of both birth centers, respectively located in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Reports to Dr. Steve Calvin, Medical Director and Founder
Proactive and effective staff management: oversee team of 10 CNMs and RN manager. Provide constructive feedback and coaching. Manage scheduling, vacations and holidays.
Maintain effective work relationship with nursing and administrative staff, consulting physicians, families and the public.
Collaborate with the administrative director on daily operations, including budget, finances, payer relations, client relations, housekeeping, maintenance, public relations, etc.
Conduct regular staff meetings and ongoing staff evaluations.
Attend board of director meetings.
Interpret and set policies regarding medical-legal responsibilities including HIPAA, client confidences, record-keeping and professional practice.
Oversee processes relating to public relations, records, QA, education of professional students, research and statistics.
Promote drive and vision of out-of-hospital birth centers, the midwife model of care, and work towards long term organizational goals.
At least 5 years experience working as a CNM.
Experience in a managerial role and demonstrated leadership skills.
Experience in, and specific interest in the out-of-hospital birth center model.
Ability to collaborate with a team and also practice independently with competence and confidence.
MN CNM and APRN licenses.
Limited OB US certification; certification is required within one year of hire.
Strong leadership skills.
Ability to learn and become proficient in MBC’s EHR (Athena).
