The North Shore Birth Center (NSBC) is a
free-standing birth center on the campus of Beverly Hospital, providing continuous, full-scope midwifery care to the North Shore community since 1980.
Our current team of eight midwives is looking to grow, with multiple competitive, benefits-eligible options available for the right candidates.
Midwives at NSBC offer continuity of care from adolescence through menopause, including labor and birth in the free-standing, home-like birth center.
We also enjoy hospital labor and delivery privileges, and long-standing collaborative relationships with local Ob/Gyn, MFM, and specialist physician groups.
Midwives participate in development of patient care policies and procedures.
We provide individual & group education for clients, staff & students. Regular continuing education is provided through the Beverly Hospital Department of Obstetrics. Malpractice insurance is included with employment.
Provides overall management for the North Shore Birth Center
Designs and implements structures, systems, and standards for improved patient care
Collaborates with midwifery, medical, and nursing staff to ensure appropriate quality care and management is provided through a cooperative effort between all disciplines
Coordinates and problem solves to ensure a seamless integration of services across the continuum of care.
Provides leadership for clinical practice and patient care delivery
Develops mechanisms to assess patients’ and families’ response to care, validating that care provided to patients is consistent with treatment plan, clinical guidelines, and is responsive to patient and family expectations.
Supports and helps implement evidenced-based practice in areas of responsibility
Designs and implements structures, systems, and standards for improved patient care delivery
Facilitates multidisciplinary care to ensure the best possible outcome for patients
Collaborates with medical and nursing staff to ensure appropriate quality care and management is provided through a cooperative effort between nurse midwives, physicians and nurses.
Manages human, fiscal and other resources
Ensures the effective and appropriate utilization of resources to ensure quality, safe, and effective patient care
Interviews and recommends candidates for hiring, promoting, transferring and terminating
Identifies and implements strategies to improve employee clinical and behavioral skills
Plans, directs and participates in employee orientation and professional development programs for staff
Completes annual performance appraisals prior to the due date
Monitors staff turnover and develops and implements retention strategies to reduce turnover
Participates in the development of annual budgets and business plans as necessary
Monitors financial performance, expenses and revenues, and plans and implements timely action steps to correct budget variances
Utilizes financial management tools and appropriately seeks assistance from the Finance Department for analysis.
Implements revenue enhancement and expense reduction strategies as appropriate
Creatively works to achieve measurable, positive outcomes in the department through design and implementation of effective teams or workgroups
Ensures compliance with professional, accreditation and regulatory standards
Is current regarding standards of care established by the profession, regulatory and accreditation bodies, and hospital and is able to implement for area of responsibility
Ensures that clinical practice is consistent with current standards, regulations, regulatory and accreditation bodies, and hospital policy and procedures
Ensures that clinical practice is compliant with accreditation standards, governmental standards and regulations, and law.
Establishes systems to monitor compliance with accreditation standards, governmental standards and regulations, and law.
Performance improvement and safety
Develops, implements and directs performance improvement and patient/employee safety programs and projects in area of responsibility
Collaborates/coordinates projects/activities with other departments, teams, and task forces to build a team approach to healthcare delivery
Implements strategies (e.g. ACNM, ACOG, IHI, Joint Commission, etc.) to improve patient safety and reduce error
Updates department specific policies based on applicable regulatory standards
Investigates and reports follow-up on issues through established channels
Monitors outcomes and benchmarks (e.g. ACNM)
Establishes department goals and objectives with a plan to achieve these goals
Participates in the promotion and marketing of the NSBC
Collaborates with Business Development and Marketing, to develop strategies that promote the growth and expansion of the NSBC.
Provides full scope OB/GYN services for healthy women
Screens clients to determine suitability for maternity or well woman gynecological care at the NSBC
Provides care during the antepartal period and continues monitoring for any deviation from the expected normal course
Provides labor support and management from admission through fourth stage where progress is normal
Provides assistance and emotional support in the postpartum period, enhancing client knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for the physical well being of the mother and infant
Provides initial care and assessment of the newborn infant and consults when appropriate
Provides well woman gynecological care and education and consults and refers clients when appropriate
Practices according to the standards of care established by the NSBC
Refers clients with risk factors or complications to the consulting physician. Maintains safe comprehensive practice with consultation, co-management or referral
3-5 years of management experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Completion of an accredited Nurse Midwifery Program. Active certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Prescriptive licensure under Massachusetts Department of Health and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency. BCLS and completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Program required.
We are a practice committed to midwifery education, but at this time require applicants with a minimum of one year in practice. Experience with out of hospital births is preferred.
