Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
Boston Medical Center is opening a new, midwifery-led Birth Center and seeks a Director of Birth Center Services. The right candidate is a certified nurse midwife with experience working in a Birth Center setting, commitment to serving diverse and under-served families, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities will include clinical and administrative oversight of all Birth Center operations, including development and maintenance of practice guidelines, staff training, communications and marketing, oversight of quality and cost metrics, collaboration with other hospital services to promote high-quality care, attendance at perinatal-related hospital meetings, and working collaboratively with the Midwifery Director around staffing, scheduling, and supervision of staff midwives. Although this position has primarily clinical and administrative responsibilities, all faculty members are expected to participate in scholarly activities, resident and medical student education, and research.
Applicants must have the ability to work colleguially in a diverse environment and demonstrate a commitment to our institutional values regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Opening in the spring of 2020, the Birth Center will be a 2-3 room, home-like setting located in an ambulatory building on our hospital campus. It will provide Birth Center care for women and their newborns receiving prenatal care at Boston Medical Center and its health center affiliates who are at low-risk for complications and who desire low-intervention care. Accreditation by the American Association of Birth Centers will be a goal in the development of the unit. Staffing will include a primary Birth Center staff, with some overlapping coverage of the inpatient services. Hospital midwives will serve as second call staff.
The hospital midwifery service, in existence since 1979, attends a diverse, multicultural population and has approximately 900 midwife-attended births/year on the labor and delivery unit. Midwives also provide full-scope midwifery care to women in 7 neighborhood health centers, the hospital OB/GYN clinic, and our Adolescent Center. The hospital service includes labor and delivery coverage 24 hrs/day, a daily postpartum rounding service, and daily coverage of our obstetrical triage unit. We work in a collaborative model with highly supportive obstetricians, perinatologists, and family medicine physicians.
The midwifery service is a multicultural group of 18 midwives who together speak English, Spanish, French, Thai, Cape Verdean Creole, and Haitian Creole. We are committed to holistic care for women and families. We have a robust Centering Pregnancy Program, and have developed services such as our Birth Sisters Program, a multi-cultural doula service offering home visiting and labor support.
