UVA University Physicians Group Opportunity for a Certified Nurse Midwife.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia, located in beautiful Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Certified Nurse Midwife for a full-time appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We currently have five CNMs and expanding to six. We are looking for a flexible, energetic, highly motivated professional to help us grow our recently-established midwifery service. Principal responsibilities include full-scope obstetrical and well-women gynecological healthcare in a midwifery clinical practice that will provide 24/7 call and in-hospital deliveries. Additional responsibilities will include performing labor and delivery triage; educating residents and medical, nurse practitioner, and midwifery students; developing women's ambulatory service programs; community outreach; and participating in departmental activities. Applicants with previous experience in supporting normal physiological childbirth in an academic medical center are encouraged to apply. The management and delivery of low risk patients.
The supervision of medical and midwifery students and residents in deliveries of low risk patients.
Supervision of other Certified Nurse Midwives in the Practice
Post-partum rounds on low risk patients.
Providing triage, assessment, diagnosis and management of patients on Labor and Delivery.
Appropriate consultation with the Chief Resident and/or OB Attending Physician for patients with medical and/or obstetrical problems, and for patients requiring antepartum admission.
Providing coverage to the OB service on Wednesdays from 7 AM – 10 AM.
The assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with common acute and chronic conditions, obstetric and gynecologic illnesses or minor trauma in conjunction with the Collaborating Physician(s).
Functions as a professional nurse while also performing acts of medical diagnosis or prescription of medical therapeutic or corrective measures in collaboration with the supervision of a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Virginia.
Provides advanced level nursing care and formulates comprehensive care plans for patients through both direct provision of care and through consultation. Provides continuity of care throughout the patient’s experience through the following activities: involvement in obtaining and performing patient history and physical, data collection and interpretation, performing necessary and negotiated interventions and procedures, evaluation of patient response, identification of and addressing patient and family educational needs, interventions and /issues, and referral to supportive care services and initiation of medical consults.
Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of patients by obtaining a complete medical history and physical data.
Interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as:
Performs a complete history and physical exam and records findings. Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
Formulates a differential diagnosis based on history, physical exam and diagnostic test results.
Prescribes medications in accordance with collaborative agreement and Virginia State Regulations.
Writes nursing orders.
Consents for admissions and procedures consistent with Health System policy, with attending supervision as needed for admissions.
Maintains a process for systematic follow-up.
Evaluates outcomes of interventions, monitors and intervenes to reduce symptoms resulting from the disease or treatment.
Provides assessment and medical and nursing decision-making between physician visits.
Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information and corresponds with referring and collaborating health care providers.
Identifies need for collaborating or consulting physician input when patient care is out of the CNM scope of experience.
Triages patient telephone calls and provides consultation regarding ongoing symptom management resulting from treatment and disease, diagnostic work-up, assessing and managing acute emergencies, managing family concerns as needed, liaison activities with affiliated physicians, nurses, pharmacists and emergency rooms.
Coordinates patient’s management/treatment plan throughout the institution, and orders consultation with other medical and supportive care specialties.

Provides monitoring and continuity of care between physicians and other medical and supportive care specialties.

Extends provision and participation of continuity of care through inpatient hospital rounding of ambulatory practice patients and follows hospitalized patients post-op to include post op phone calls and clinical follow-up.
Initiates appropriate evaluation and management of emergency situations.
Coordinates patient’s management/treatment plan throughout the institution.
Participates in conferences and research activities as needed.
Appropriately operates all equipment required for the performance of duties.
Uses current evidence based practice to facilitate quality outcomes.
Ethical decision making.
Participates in active problem solving for practice and interdepartmental issues.
Uses resources judiciously.
Work jointly with other CNMs and NPs in outpatient practice to collaboratively cover clinical responsibilities.

Instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments. Educates patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
Functions as an educator through any or all of the following mechanisms: Participate in teaching medical students, junior residents and midwifery students the management of normal labor and delivery and provide feedback regarding their performance; providing education to patients, families and the health care team, planning and implementing educational programs for the community and/or presenting to professionals within the local, regional, national or international healthcare community.
Participates in in-services including obstetrical provider meetings
Participates in nursing scholarly endeavors
Must be credentialed through the office of Medical Affairs to practice as a CNM within the UPHS and maintain credentials as indicated:, obtain state approved Prescriptive Authority, maintenance of all required licensures and CEUs – RN, CNM, Prescriptive, DEA and ANA certification in area of specialty. Obtain UPINN and Medicare # - to become a billing provider – comply with all documentation guidelines as established.

Actively engages in quality and safety initiatives of the OB service and participates in CEQI, safety and risk reduction initiatives as requested.
Participates in safety initiatives of the department and at interdepartmental levels to improve care outcomes within the system of care
Works collaboratively with physicians and research staff to screen, recruit, counsel, and /or manage patients who are eligible for clinical trials.
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Education: BSN and Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited midwifery program or equivalent training
Experience: Recent experience managing the healthcare of women in accordance with ACNM standards or ACNM currency of practice certificate (if 5 years or more since original certification), Experience providing full scope midwifery care (5+ years preferred)
Licensure: Current Virginia RN license, Current CNM/NP Virginia license, Virginia Authorization to prescribe and DEA#, National Certification from the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and maintains national certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board (ACMB), Current AHA Health Care Provider BLS certification, Current AAP NRP certification, Current NCC EFM certification
