Mom/Baby UnitMom & Baby is a 28-bed unit within Women and Children’s Health, caring for post-partum patients after delivery, as well as their newborns. There are typically 300 deliveries per month. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6 - 8, and a CNA in the nursery. Mom/baby nurses also act as "admit" RNs for all infants transferred to the Mom & Baby unit. Nurses take care of many babies whose status does not require NICU care, but who are not yet ready to go home. Mom/Baby nurses may periodically care for a number of GYN patients.
Job Summary
This job provides expert care in lactation management according to the International Lactation Consultant Association and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Standards of Practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The IBCLC serves as an expert consultant to nursing staff, physicians, and other health care workers in the management of complex breastfeeding for the parent/infant dyad. The IBCLC educates expectant and new parents in various aspects of breastfeeding/lactation management.
Essential Functions:
Practices autonomously to provide expert lactation care and clinical management for inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding dyads. (25%)
Manages lactation issues and utilizes appropriate resources to solve problems for inpatient and outpatient dyads. (25%)
Coordinates the support for breast feeding of separated parent/infants (5%)
Provides education and consultation to patients and health care team members using evidence-based practice standards. (15%)
Contributes to the achievement of divisional and organizational goals. (10%)
Completes appropriate charting in EMR (10%)
May contribute to the development and presentation of lactation programs and policies based on facility requirements. (10%)
Education:
High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years Direct lactation experience working with dyads in the newborn setting Required
Licenses:
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
CLC-Certified Lactation Counselor - ALPP - Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice Required
IBCLC-International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants - IBCLE - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
